As Colder Months Arrive, Denver Parks and Recreation Encourages Residents to Take Advantage of Fitness and Educational Activities at Local Recreation Centers
As part of the Recreation Center Reopening Plan, recreation center memberships are now offered for sale in-person and online as of Mon., Nov. 1. To celebrate the reopening of all 30 Denver recreation centers and to thank customers for returning to their local centers, Individual Annual Memberships are discounted by 45% during November. All recreation centers have returned to (pre-COVID) full operating hours and offer a large variety of amenities, fitness classes and activities. Three recreation center membership levels are available: Regional, Local and Neighborhood. These tiers are based on the amenities offered and the hours of operation at each location. All memberships include access to recreation centers, drop-in fitness and aqua fitness classes, plus access to all outdoor pools during the summer months. Recreation Center Membership is free to Denver students, ages 5 - 18, through the MY Denver Card and MY Denver Prime for residents 60 and up. In addition, all residents within the 80216-zip code are eligible to receive a 90% discount on registrations and memberships. Residents can register for this discount at the Johnson, Swansea and 5090 BroadwayRecreation Centers. Weekend Drop Off Begins Saturday Today, the City and County of Denver will begin weekend collections for LeafDrop, a free program that allows residents to sustainably donate their leaves and old pumpkins to be composted rather than end up in a landfill. Weekday collections began October 4 and will end December 3; however, weekend services will end November 14 - see full schedule and locations below. Composting is nature’s way of recycling and returning valuable organic matter and nutrients to soil to be used again to help plants thrive. Compost created through Denver’s LeafDrop Program is made available for residents to purchase at a discounted rate in the spring. Weekday Drop Sites: Oct. 4 – Dec. 3 The following LeafDrop locations will be open on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.:
Weekend Drop Sites: Oct. 30 – Nov. 14 The following LeafDrop locations will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.: · Bruce Randolph High School – E. 40th Ave. and Steele St. · Cherry Creek Transfer Station - 7301 E. Jewell Ave. (enter on E. Jewell Ave.) · Kennedy High School – Newland St. and Brown Pl. · Sloan’s Lake Park - 17th Ave. and Sheridan Blvd. (enter on W. 17th Ave.) · Veterans Park – S. Vine St. and E. Iowa Ave. The Cherry Creek Transfer Station is the only site accepting loose leaves. Leaves brought to all other LeafDrop sites must be in bags. When dropping off raked leaves, paper bags are preferred - they can also be composted! Key changes include updates to the way the code regulates households, consolidation of all Residential Care uses into a single system regulated by size, rather than by population served, and addition of a new Congregate Living category that allows for the evolution of residential uses that are not in conventional dwelling units. Online Event Location: Zoom Virtual Public Meeting #2: Congress Park Playground Thursday, November 5, 2020 | 3:30 - 5:00 pm Online - Zoom | https://tinyurl.com/CongressPlay2 Join Denver Parks & Recreation (DPR) for the second meeting regarding the renovation of the Congress Park Playground. The design concepts for the playground will be presented for community feedback. It’s that time of year when the leaves will start falling from the trees, and Denver Recycles wants to help Denver residents keep those leaves out of the landfill and compost them through the LeafDrop program.
Rather than waiting up to eight weeks to set out bagged leaves on their scheduled Extra Trash Collection (ETC) day, residents can bring them to LeafDrop sites for free. Leaves set out for ETC or in trash carts are sent straight to the landfill, but leaves brought to LeafDrop are composted. Weekday sites will be open to Denver residents from Monday, Oct. 5 through Friday, Dec. 4. Weekend drop-off sites are also scheduled to open for three consecutive weekends starting October 31st. We are asking residents to use paper bags whenever possible. Unlike plastic bags, brown paper bags can be composted along with the leaves, which makes the LeafDrop program more efficient, saves time, and significantly reduces plastic waste. Most importantly, brown paper bags are safer for our employees to handle at drop sites during the COVID-19 pandemic. Residents can get a free 5-pack of paper leaf bags at participating Denver-area Ace Hardware stores. The coupon is included on the Denver Recycles website. Additionally, we are asking that you remind residents not to sweep or rake leaves into the streets, as City ordinance prohibits it and doing so can cause extensive drainage problems in neighborhoods.
